I have to carry out a control for a photovoltaic plant, where it is assumed to install ca 250 Weidmuller Transclinic string controls that provide a connection in RS485 with Modbus RTU protocol.
The converters are located in 8 islands, and must be concentrated towards an operations center where a special super-vision program will be installed. Given the distances involved, greater than 1200 meters of RS485, it is assumed to create a fiber optic network, I thought of creating a fiber link between the different devices and / or between the different islands.
What products recommended.

It is possible to create an RS485 network (in copper) between the various string readers of the individual islands and then convert the island network into optical fiber and bring it via a fiber connection to the operations center. I don't recommend the optical link between the islands but I would choose a point-to-point solution between the operations center and the 8 islands. We will use 8 pairs of Serial / Fiber converters (Example ATC-277), installed one on each island and 8 in the operations center. In this way the system will be divided into 8 independent zones, and in the event of a converter failure or an interruption in the fiber network I would have the block of only one island. In the case of a fiber ring, on the other hand, the entire system would be blocked. Moreover, if in the future it were necessary to add services, such as cameras or other devices to be controlled, simply replace the two Serial / Fiber converters of the link with two Ethenet / Fiber converters (Example TRP-C41), in order to have an Ethernet connection between the two points, by means of an Ethernet / Serial converter (Example ATC-2000), the RS485 connection with string controls can be carried over the ethernet network.
